Every week this season we will participate in weekly fantasy football salary leagues at various sites, and for Week 1 we are using Draft$treet.com.
They use a $100,000 salary cap and the roster consists of 2 QB, 2 RB, 2 WR, 1 TE, 2 FLEX and 1 DST. We almost always fill the FLEX positions with running backs, so it is essentially four running backs as far as we are concerned. This site gives four points for touchdown passes and ½ point per reception, a combination that makes quarterbacks less valuable.
With that in mind, we do not splurge on elite quarterbacks, opting for guys with value and upside instead. As for the four running backs, we prefer spending the money for two top end backs and filling the other two slots with cheap sleepers, as opposed to talking four middle-of-the-road guys as we feel the top running backs are the players that win you these leagues.
Here is our DraftStreet lineup for Week 1.
QB – Jay Cutler, CHI ($14,125): We like Cutler a lot this year now that he is reunited with receiver Brandon Marshall and is back in a standard offense with Mike Martz gone. The Colts present a nice matchup to boot!
QB – Jake Locker, TEN ($10,440): Of all the “cheap” quarterbacks, we feel Locker has the most potential to have a big week, unless you really feel that the New England defense is improved. We don’t.
RB – LeSean McCoy, PHI ($16,087): Let us preface this by saying that we have Ray Rice as the top running back this year in PPR formats. However, we feel McCoy is the man this week because he draws the pitiful Browns.
RB – Darren Sproles, NO ($11,665): This is outstanding value on a running back that we have ranked sixth in PPR leagues, especially since he is not even on the injury report after nursing a knee in preseason.
WR – Julio Jones, ATL ($12,697): How high are we on Julio inAtlanta’s new, up-tempo offense? We have him as the second ranked receiver behind only Megatron, making Jones worth this price.
WR – Antonio Brown, PIT ($10,101): We get that Mike Wallace reported to the Steelers last week, but he may have a bit of a slow start while getting in game shape and Brown will get most of the targets.
TE – Jared Cook, TEN ($7,047): Cook had a great finish to last season, he was targeted by Locker often in preseason and Kenny Britt is out. Oh did we mention the Patriots? Cook is great value at this cheap price.
FLEX – DeAngelo Williams, CAR ($8,046): We would normally not give DeAngelo a second look but Jonathan Stewart is out this week and Williams is going up against a porous Tampa Bay defense.
FLEX – Rashad Jennings, JAC ($5,575): No we have not been locked in a cave and we’re well aware that Maurice Jones-Drew reported. ButJennings is starting this week and will get most of the touches.
DST – Seattle Seahawks ($4,055): The Seattle defense was very good against the run last year, improved its pass defense in the draft, looked sensational in preseason and is facing a poor Arizona offensive line. Enough said!
